We live in a world where the "hot" topic in dentistry is dental implants.

Do you have gum disease? Why bother? Extract and put in new ones!

Are your teeth loose? Why bother and work hard, long treatment? Extract and put in new ones!

These are the messages that attack us, the general public, and also dentists, from all sides. In this article,

I want to share with you information that will help you understand how you can contribute to the health of natural teeth and "strengthen" them, and thereby contribute to your dental health and also to your general health, both in the short and medium term, and in the long term.

4 ways that will help you maintain natural teeth!

1. Teeth are organs created by nature. As such, they integrate better into the gums, contribute to the health of the gums and the surrounding bone, and with proper maintenance, appear "much more easily" natural and aesthetic.

  1. Like any organ or product, teeth also need maintenance, throughout life. Daily cleaning (twice and usually three times a day), periodic visits to the dental hygienist to remove tartar and gum plaque (usually every three to four months, and not just "once every six months"). Periodic visits at least semi-annually to the dentist are the basic steps that will allow your teeth and gums to be healthy and functioning for a long time. Yes, it contributes to beauty, but it contributes much more to "character," to the health of the teeth, gums, and supporting bone.

  2. Feeling you have gum inflammation – get checked: Many times, the source of gum inflammation or even gum disease is defective restorations. A filling with damaged margins, a crown or bridge with an irregular contour – something the patient cannot identify, but a skilled doctor can, certainly in combination with an X-ray examination – can cause inflammation and long-term damage. Sometimes "all that is needed" is to replace crowns and bridges, and "lo and behold": bleeding stops, gums become pink, swellings disappear.

  3. I was told that my teeth are "sick" or "weak," so extract and put in implants? Dozens of studies lead dentists to the conclusion that, as much as possible, it is preferable to "save" teeth that have undergone gum disease or are loose, rather than "give up," extract, and insert implants: also the fact that implants are sensitive to gum disease, also the complication rates in restorations on implants are higher than the complications in restorations on natural teeth, and also implants "get lost" for these or other reasons.

Bottom line, over the years, the life expectancy of a natural dentition treated and maintained properly (follow-up and treatment by a doctor, hygienist, and the patient) is greater than that of implants. Unfortunately, nowadays, many doctors recommend almost "blindly" to give up, extract, and implant, without trying the option of saving, with the knowledge and efforts it requires. Make sure you are with an updated and honest doctor, hear the treatment plan, if necessary do not hesitate to go to another doctor or specialist for a "second opinion," and then make an informed decision about the plan that suits you.
